Bad Axe, Michigan: The Huron County Prosecutor’s Office recognizes January as National Human Trafficking Prevention Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness of human trafficking, supporting victims, and strengthening efforts to prevent this crime in our communities.
Human trafficking is a serious and often hidden crime that can affect individuals of all ages, backgrounds, and communities, including rural areas. It involves the use of force, fraud, or coercion for the purpose of exploitation, including labor or sex trafficking. Awareness and education are critical tools in identifying and stopping trafficking before further harm occurs.
“Human trafficking is not an abstract or distant problem, it can and does occur in communities like ours,” said Prosecuting Attorney Timothy J. Rutkowski. “National Human Trafficking Prevention Month reminds us that awareness saves lives. When people know what to look for and how to report concerns, we increase our ability to protect victims and hold offenders accountable.”

A Time to Raise Awareness
As part of this national observance, January 11 is Wear Blue Sunday, a day dedicated to elevating awareness of human trafficking and standing in solidarity with victims and survivors. Community members are encouraged to wear blue as a visible sign of support and commitment to prevention.
The public plays an important role in combating human trafficking. If you suspect human trafficking:
- Call the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 888-373-7888, or
- Contact local law enforcement immediately.
Reports can be made anonymously, and all credible tips are taken seriously.
The Huron County Prosecutor’s Office remains committed to working with law enforcement, community partners, and service providers to prevent human trafficking, support victims, and pursue justice. Increased awareness during January, and throughout the year, helps ensure that victims are not overlooked and that our community remains vigilant against exploitation.
